What to Expect
How to prepare your campaign for running for National Office
Pre-Event Campaigning
It’s important for candidates to start their campaign before the event actually begins!
Many candidates will utilize social media to connect with fellow students before the event and share their message. Additionally, candidates will oftentimes use this time to prepare any signs, posters, or campaign merchandise to use during the event.
Consider creating a slogan or message of some kind, and preparing for the primary and general open forums.
Finally, you might want help with your campaign! This is a chance for you to apply what you learned at State Class and assemble your very own campaign team.
Review the Election Rules! It’s important to be familiar with the rules before the event so you run no risk of losing votes or being disqualified during the event.
The first step of the election is the Primary Election! You’ll join your party for an open forum, similar to what you experienced during your State Class. During the Primary Open Forum, you will be asked questions and given an opportunity to share some of your thoughts. Having some talking points already thought out could help you be ready for Primaries. Afterwards, parties will vote for one Presidential/Vice Presidential ticket, four Senatorial candidates, and nine Representative Candidates to move onto the General Election.
Primary Election
Consider writing your speech for the General Election. Representative and Senatorial candidates who are elected out of the Primary Election will be given the opportunity to present a speech in front of the entire National Convention student body (One minute for representatives and one and half minutes for senators). Having this written ahead of time could be very helpful to your campaign.
